Carolyn Smith

Deputy Chair

Carolyn has been a Board member of Head and Neck Cancer Australia since August 2020 and was appointed Deputy Chair of the Board in February 2024.  Carolyn underwent treatment for throat cancer in 2019 and is able to bring a lived experience to the Board. Carolyn lives in Canberra, ACT.

Carolyn has extensive experience in policy advising, regulation and leadership after 30 years in the Australian Public Service (APS).  Since leaving the APS, she has focused on board roles in the not for profit sector and providing strategic advice and consumer advocacy in health and aged care.  She was a Senior Adviser to the Royal Commission on Aged Care Quality and Safety from November 2018 to February 2020. She was a Board member of Palliative Care ACT from 2019 to 2023 and undertook a scoping study on establishment of a non clinical respite service for those with a life limiting illness.  In 2023, she was Co-Chair of the Cancer Council of Australia Care Navigation reference group.  She has recently been appointed to the Consumer Reference Group for the Canberra Region Cancer Centre.
